When registering for their Baby Shower, most pregnant women focus on registering for much needed baby items. Friends and family happily buy these items, helping to set the new Mother up with everything her newborn might need. Although this is obviously important, there is an equally important aspect that is often overlooked, both by the pregnant Mother-To-Be and her friends and family. And that is, support for the new Mother during childbirth and after! Moms who are not given proper support during labor/delivery and during their postpartum journey are at higher risk for experiencing difficulties and emotional/mental distress.  Types of support for the new Mom include a Birth Doula to help during labor & delivery, a Postpartum Doula to help in the weeks after giving birth, a Lactation Consultant to help with any breastfeeding, pumping, or milk production issues, and Placenta Encapsulation Services to provide hormonal stabilization.

A Lactation Consultant is a healthcare professional who specialize in breastfeeding. They provide comprehensive support and guidance to mothers throughout their breastfeeding journey.  Being supported by a licensed Lactation Consultant has been shown to increase breastfeeding success rates, improve Mother-Baby bonding, reduce the risk of breastfeeding-related complications, increase confidence in the new Mother and promote satisfaction with her breastfeeding journey.

Lactation consultants can be found in hospitals, clinics, private practice, breastfeeding support groups, and online. They typically have a bachelor's degree in healthcare or a related field and usually hold the International Board-Certified Lactation Consultant (IBCLC) credential.

The ways in which a Lactation Consultant can help are numerous, including:

  • Assessing breastfeeding difficulties, such as latch problems, milk supply issues, and pain
  • Providing evidence-based information on breastfeeding techniques, positioning, and milk production
  • Assisting with resolving breastfeeding challenges, such as poor latch, low milk supply, or engorgement
  • Offering emotional support and encouragement to mothers facing breastfeeding difficulties
  • Guidance on proper pumping techniques and milk storage
  • Guidance on transitioning from breastfeeding to formula or solid foods
  • Observing and assessing the baby's feeding habits and identify any potential issues
  • Collaborating with hospitals and community organizations to promote breastfeeding and provide support to mothers

Placenta Encapsulation Services are also a very important aspect of support for the postpartum Mother. A Placenta Specialist is a birth professional who has been trained and certified in safe food handling practices, proper bloodborne pathogens safety, and placenta processing techniques. They are taught how the placenta can be utilized to support and benefit new Moms, and how to do so with safety and quality as a top priority!

The benefits of Placental Consumption are numerous, and include:

  • Replenish Iron levels & prevent postnatal anemia
    • The placenta is rich in Iron and contains the hormone Hemoglobin which replenishes iron and stimulates iron production in blood.  Why is this important?  Low iron levels can cause low hormone levels, fatigue, lack of concentration, and depressive symptoms. Studies have shown that women with postpartum depression who are given iron supplements improve greatly.
    • Why not just take pharmaceutical Iron supplements instead?  Manufactured iron found in supplements is processed differently in the body than the natural iron content found in the placenta. The placenta contains natural iron that is unique only to you, therefore you never run the risk of having a build-up of too much pharmaceutical-derived iron in the body…the body simply absorbs any un-needed excess.
  • Stabilize hormones & lessen the risk of developing "baby blues" or Postpartum Depression
    • The placenta produces high-levels of stress-fighting hormones (CRH or Corticotropin Releasing Hormone) during pregnancy that signal the brain to decrease it’s natural production of those hormones. After birth, the placenta and all those stress-fighting hormones are suddenly gone – it can take the body at least 6-8 weeks to regulates it’s natural production back up to normal and this sudden drop in hormones can lead to depressive and/or anxious feelings (aka: baby blues and/or postpartum depression). Thus, supplementing with your placenta during the first 6-8 weeks after giving birth can help bridge the gap, providing you with these important hormones until your body is naturally producing them again on its own. The placenta also contains the hormone Oxytocin, also known as the “feel good” or “love” hormone, which promotes feelings of happiness. In addition, the placenta contains Progesterone which can help stabilize postpartum mood.
  • Natural pain relief
    • The placenta contains POEF (placental opioid-enhancing factor) that increases the effectiveness of opioids (pharmaceutical pain medication). The placenta also contains the hormone Oxytocin which can aid in pain relief.  Why is this important?  When recovering from a C-section, episiotomy, severe tear, or postpartum prolapsed uterus or cervix, placenta ingestion can increase the potency of your pain meds **resulting in the mother needing less pain medicine in order reach her desired pain management level**
  • Stimulate an early & healthy milk supply
    • The placenta produces the hormones Estrogen, Prolactin, Oxytocin, and HPL or “human placenta lactogen”, all of which stimulates healthy mammary gland function and milk supply.
  • Lessen postpartum bleeding
    • The hormones Oxytocin and Urokinase Inhibiting Factor & Factor XIII, found in the placenta, greatly reduce postpartum bleeding.
  • Promote healing
    • Cortisone reduces inflammation and swelling and promotes healing.  Interferon stimulates the immune system to fight off infection. Prostaglandins act as an anti-inflammatory. Urokinase Inhibiting Factor & Factor XIII promotes healing. All of which are found in your amazing placenta!
  • Provide an Energy boost
    • Thyroid Stimulating Hormone, found in the placenta, regulates the thyroid gland and boosts energy. The placenta contains hormones called Cortisone which unlocks and stimulates the body’s energy reserves; as well as Iron and Hemoglobin which also provides a boost in energy.
  • Help the uterus return to pre-pregnancy size
    • The hormones Testosterone and Prostaglandins regulate contractions in the uterus helping it to shrink back down to its pre-pregnancy size faster.
  • Stimulate the immune system
    • The hormone Interferon triggers the immune system to fight infections -Immunoglobulin G (IgG) also supports immune function.
  • Improve sleep quality
    • The Serotonin-rich placenta helps regulate sleep patterns and can help you return to deep sleep after waking up for feedings.

Every new Mother deserves the tremendous support that Placenta Supplements can provide, but not everyone can afford to give themselves this gift. For this reason, it is imperative that Placenta Services be normalized as an important service that should be added to every Baby Shower Registry!

If you are pregnant, I strongly suggest that you include the following items to your Baby Shower Registry so that you can be fully supported both during and after childbirth:

  • Gift Certificate for a Birth Doula
  • Gift Certificate for a Postpartum Doula
  • Gift Certificate for a Lactation Consultant
