Whether you are about to be a first-time Mom, or simply giving birth at a new Hospital this time around, it can sometimes be a little stressful not knowing what to expect from your local Hospital when its time to deliver. St. David’s Medical Centers – Central Texas

If you plan to deliver at one of St. David’s Austin or Central Texas Medical Centers you can expect a full spectrum of services, including advanced neonatal resources & care, maternity classes, maternity tours, spacious rooms, and breastfeeding support. At St. David’s, if a cesarean birth becomes necessary, their fully equipped C-section suites are conveniently located to provide immediate, seamless care. For non-emergency C-sections, they encourage the father, partner or support person to attend. Visiting hours while you are in labor are unlimited and family, friends, and your birth support team are welcome.

St. David’s HealthCare offers additional resources and services for high-risk pregnancies, including:

  • Nurse Navigator Program: After your referral to this program, St. David’s nurse navigator will connect with you and your family to coordinate a personalized visit of their maternity areas and NICUs. They will also coordinate an in-person consultation with one of their neonatologists to discuss care and expectations.
  • Neonatal Surgery: If it is determined that neonatal surgery is necessary for your baby, your nurse navigators at St. David's Medical Center can partner with your obstetrician and maternal fetal medicine physician to deliver expert care of you and your baby.
  • NICU: St. David's HealthCare NICUs provide advanced technology and expert staff consisting of neonatologists, neonatal nurse practitioners, neonatal nurses and other specialty experts. All of their hospitals also have the ability to transport patients to a higher level NICU, if needed.
  • Neonatal & Maternal Transport Team: Transport teams are on-call 24/7 to transport patients via air or ambulance. St. David’s receives mothers and high-risk babies from around the state who benefit from a multidisciplinary team of experts. This team includes board-certified maternal-fetal medicine specialists, obstetricians, cardiologists, neurologists, neurosurgeons, pediatric surgeons and nephrologists.

St. David’s Medical Centers provide a personalized childbirth experience that includes:

  • Skin-to-Skin: St. David’s is committed to helping all families enjoy skin-to-skin care as soon as possible after birth. Baby is typically placed on a parent’s chest within minutes of birth and they may continue holding baby until it's time for the first feeding. Skin-to-skin bonding is also practiced in the operating room.
  • Rooming-In: Their Labor & Delivery suites are designed for families to remain together after delivery. This practice, known as rooming-in, and gives parents time to get to know their baby immediately after birth.
  • Breastfeeding Support: St. David’s team understands the importance of breastfeeding and has dedicated a full-time International Board-Certified Lactation Consultant to help parents navigate the start of their breastfeeding journey. Additionally, all of their nurses are trained to assist with basic breastfeeding needs.

St. David’s HealthCare also offers parent education classes that provide answers to questions about childbirth, newborn care, breastfeeding, C-sections and other topics. Expectant parents may take classes at any of their locations, regardless of where they plan to deliver. They host their childbirth education classes at St. David's Medical Center, St. David's North Austin Medical Center, and St. David's South Austin Medical Center.
